Another 100 families will have the joy of moving into their own homes in Phase 2 of the Integrated Residential Development Programme (IRDP) in Blompark, Gansbaai. Eight houses are for those with disabilities and special needs.
In August 2022, the first 150 houses were completed and handed over to beneficiaries as part of phase 1. If all goes according to plan, Phase 3 (the last phase) of 150 houses will commence in April 2023.
The development will deliver 539 top structures. The total costs in respect of both civil infrastructure and houses amounts to R124.8 million.
On delivering her speech, Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, thanked the community of Blompark and Beverly Hills, for waiting their turn in allowing the Western Cape Housing Department to successfully deliver the housing project.
The Mayor urged the beneficiaries to look after and to maintain their property as it contributes to its value. She encouraged the new home owners to draw up a will without delay to unsure that “your house go to the people you want”.
The Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers said he is proud to say that houses that were promised to the communities of Blompark a year-and-a half ago at the sod-turning, have been delivered and ended their wait for a housing opportunity. “I am delighted that we have achieved this and turned what was once hope into joy and reality for these community members.”
Among the beneficiaries who received their keys from the Minister was Leonie Pieters, a beneficiary who has a hearing impairment. She applied for a housing subsidy 15 years ago and, at 59 years old, she became a homeowner for the very first time. Her daughter Eloise Dyk translated what her mom said: “Having lived most of my life on farms and informality I feel blessed to have a proper roof over my head and to know it belongs to me”.
